Sanctuary Computer Inc, part of the garden3d worker-owned creative collective, is looking for a contract-based Senior Shopify Developer to join its Design and Development team. This is an opportunity to build elegant, high-performing commerce experiences for ambitious brands and organizations, working alongside designers, technical leads and product-minded collaborators. You will create custom Shopify storefronts that feel fast, refined and deeply considered, from Online Store 2.0 Liquid themes to headless implementations using Shopify Storefront API, Hydrogen, Remix and Next.js. The work spans pixel-perfect frontend development, scalable commerce architecture, third-party integrations, performance optimization and clear technical documentation. Sanctuary Computer builds design-forward websites, robust web applications, native mobile products and commerce platforms for clients and partners across technology, culture, art, education and social impact. The wider collective has worked with organizations including Google, Stripe, Figma, Mozilla, Etsy, MIT, The Nobel Prize, ACLU and others. In this role, you will collaborate closely with designers and technical leads to translate brand vision and product strategy into accessible, responsive and conversion-focused shopping experiences. You will solve complex e-commerce challenges with pragmatic, high-quality engineering, balancing craft, maintainability, performance and commercial outcomes. Key responsibilities include building and maintaining Shopify storefronts, developing reusable component systems, integrating Shopify with headless CMS platforms and third-party commerce tools, optimizing Core Web Vitals across product and collection pages, supporting sprint rituals, reviewing code, and documenting store operations and custom integrations. The ideal candidate is calm, thoughtful, highly accountable and comfortable working in a remote-friendly, async-first environment. Requirements

8+ years of experience writing high-performance frontend code for production web applications or e-commerce platforms. Deep expertise in the Shopify ecosystem, including custom Shopify themes, Liquid, JSON templates and Online Store 2.0. Proven experience building headless Shopify storefronts using Shopify Storefront API, GraphQL, Hydrogen, Remix and/or Next.js. Expert-level frontend skills with TypeScript, modern JavaScript and contemporary CSS approaches such as Tailwind CSS, CSS Modules or similar methodologies. Strong ability to implement responsive, accessible and pixel-perfect interfaces from detailed design specifications. Experience with animation and interaction libraries such as GSAP or Framer Motion, with sensitivity to product interaction details and motion design. Hands-on experience integrating Shopify with headless CMS platforms such as Sanity, Contentful or Prismic. Experience with commerce and marketing integrations such as Klaviyo, Recharge, Algolia, Searchspring, Stripe, payment gateways, subscription platforms and third-party APIs. Strong understanding of e-commerce performance optimization, including Core Web Vitals, Lighthouse scores, image and video delivery, bundle size, caching and runtime efficiency. Experience deploying and maintaining storefronts on platforms such as Vercel, Netlify and Shopify Oxygen. Knowledge of state management and commerce architecture patterns for cart state, multi-currency experiences and checkout flows, using tools such as Zustand, Redux or Pinia. Commitment to accessibility, SEO best practices, maintainable code and testing with tools such as Jest, Playwright or Cypress. Nice to have: experience building custom Shopify apps with Node.js, Remix, GraphQL Admin API and Shopify CLI. Nice to have: Shopify Plus experience, including Shopify Functions, Checkout Branding API, Shopify Scripts and B2B configurations. Nice to have: experience with server-side tracking, Google Tag Manager, Meta Pixel and Customer Privacy APIs. Nice to have: WebGL, Canvas, Three.js or 3D product visualization experience. Nice to have: backend and API experience with PostgreSQL, REST, GraphQL, OAuth or JWT. Nice to have: client-facing experience, product roadmap contribution or engineering team leadership.
