Description

KoboToolbox is hiring a Remote Frontend Web Application Developer to help build and improve a global data collection platform used by more than 32,000 organizations worldwide. Our tools support over 20 million survey submissions every month and power data-driven work across humanitarian response, public health, research, environmental action, education, and community development. This is a full-time role of approximately 35–40 hours per week, with expected overlap during US Eastern business hours. You will report to the Lead Developer and collaborate with a distributed technical team on a mature, high-impact web application. In this role, you will work across a large, long-lived frontend codebase, balancing thoughtful modernization with reliable delivery. You will build robust, reusable, well-tested user interfaces, investigate bugs, review code, contribute to architecture discussions, and help shape the future of a platform relied on in complex and often urgent real-world contexts. We are looking for someone with proven experience developing large-scale, API-driven single-page applications and the curiosity, initiative, and collaborative mindset to solve problems with care. You should be comfortable navigating both modern frontend technologies and legacy systems, using AI-assisted development tools responsibly, and communicating clearly with teammates, support staff, and the broader user community. Requirements

Required qualifications: - Professional experience building, deploying, and maintaining client-side code for real-world, API-driven single-page applications. - Strong proficiency with TypeScript, React, and modern frontend development practices. - Experience with styling, state management, component architecture, and efficient HTTP-based data exchange. - Willingness and ability to work confidently with legacy technologies, including Backbone and CoffeeScript. - Recent hands-on experience participating in code reviews, both giving and receiving constructive feedback. - Ability to independently set up, run, debug, and troubleshoot a local development environment. - Strong Git skills and familiarity with collaborative development workflows. - Excellent spoken and written English communication skills. - Ability to overlap with US Eastern Time business hours. - Average availability of at least 30 hours per week, preferably 35 hours or more. - Genuine interest in data collection, surveys, humanitarian technology, and improving tools used in challenging real-world environments. Preferred qualifications: - Experience using Docker and Docker Compose in development environments. - Python development experience, ideally with Django and Django REST Framework. - Experience building user-facing LLM or AI-powered features. - Familiarity with XLSForm, ODK XForm, OpenRosa, or digital survey standards. - Experience integrating Stripe or similar payment processing platforms.
